Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization law in 2011 in response to a series of food safety issues. The law gives the FDA new powers over the food industry–from growers and harvesters to distributors, wholesalers and retail food establishments. In 2023 the FDA issued an update to the rules: The New Era of Smarter Food Safety that will have a major impact on the seafood industry.
